Day 9  Puno

Lake Titicaca is known as the Little Switzerland of South America, and there is a floating island on the lake that has been floating for hundreds of years. After breakfast, we will sail from Puno Bay Marina and arrive at Uros Island in about 30 minutes. There are several reed houses and watchtowers on the island. The island itself is made of reed grass and a few bamboo branches are stuck under the water to hold it in place, and the islanders still live a traditional Peruvian life on the island. The Ulo islanders often row a small boat made of reeds called “Totora” alone along the waterways, creating a unique look of Lake Titicaca. At present, there are more than 40 floating islands in the lake, each of which is of different sizes, with about ten people living on the small ones, and schools, post offices and stores on the big ones! On Uluo Island, we can learn how the islanders use reeds to build their houses and boats, and how they live on the reeds, which is the most primitive way of life, without modern electric system and gas equipment. In addition, we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the highest inland lake in South America, the clear sky, reflecting the blue water, the air is fresh and the environment is quiet, as if walking into a dreamy wonderland.

If time permits (2h free time) (no extra charge or refund), we will stop by Sillustani. In the Titicaca Lake area, the Colla people, the original inhabitants of the area, built many columnar upright towers, the largest of which, and one of the best preserved, is located in Sillustani. During the Inca period, the custom of burial in towers was still practiced in the Titicaca region. From the technical point of view of stone construction, it is easy to distinguish the age of the stone from that of the Inca, as the surface of the stone blocks of the Inca period is smooth and the joints are tightly fitted, while the stone blocks of the pre-Inca period are much rougher and less stable. A few of the historic towers have been preserved over the years, but most of them have been broken or have only foundation stones left.
